Khalid Sulaiman al-Dakheel is an Arabian award winning cartoonist, animator, voice actor, entertainer and director. Known as the first cartoon and animation filmmaker in his region. al-Dakheel’s personal website was launched in 2002. Khalid al-Dakheel Cartoon Inc. is planned to be officially established in 2011.

Khalid al-Dakheel began drawing and creating cartoon characters when he was five years old. At 10, he started creating comics, and at 18 years old he published his first comic called Hassan al-Fannan in a comic al-Jeel al-Jadeed comic magazine. His drawings and comics are influenced by Japanese Manga and his animations are Anime-inspired. His general style is a combination of Disney style and motion and the look and feel of Anime characters that Khalid grew up with. And Hayao Miyazaki is Khalid’s idol and the influence on his work.

In 1992, Khalid started animating frame by frame by making flip-book cartoons. He developed his way of animating by working with a video camera and some simple tools he made. He produced his first 15 minute cartoon about Pac Man, which he animated frame by frame. Later, while watching Woody Woodpecker, he discovered the Cel method, which he used to make his other cartoons, by separating the character layers from the backgrounds and props. He also used a video camera to create stop motion short films using clay and toys.

Khalid has always been passionate about acting and directing – and later began live-action filmmaking with his brothers and friends. He made his first short film called The Butcher with his brother Ahmed and Abdullah, wherein he personally acted as more than five characters, which led him into video editing.

He joined The Saudi Association Of Culture and Arts in 1998, where he stayed for only a few months. He described the situation there as “a mess”. The famous TV channel Al-Arabiya interviewed later in 2006 where he spoke honestly about his experience in the Saudi Association, describing the horrible situations there.

In 2000, Khalid started using Adobe Flash (Macromedia Flash back then), with which he made couple of short animated cartoons, the first was called Kick Kivi, which he created using just a mouse. This cartoon and ones that followed were emotional vents of anger and feelings, specifically Cats Benefits in 2003 (when he first launched his website) a film that was highly rated and participated in couple of film festivals including Emirates Film Competition in 2007.

In 2004, Khalid worked on couple of TV programs, as an illustrator, video editor, story-board artist and director. He directed TV commercials in a Cartoon style for some companies. But as he’s always been into creating animation and cartoons for entertainment, he produced Sida in 2006. The film is a traditional story that takes place in Arabia in 1960. The story, which was told to Khalid by his mother, is about a man called Sida who was known for his bizarre and mysterious character.

Khalid participated with Sida in couple of short films festivals, where he received his first award (A Special Mention Award for Sida’s Production Quality) at the Emirates Film Competition (Efilm) in 2006, as well as a Daily Third Place Award at the online animation network Newgrounds, among other honors. The film was shown in other festivals and animation networks, including Jordan Short Films Festival, and the first Saudi film festival called Jeddah Film Festival in 2006. And many articles were written about him and his art – as well as TV and press interviews he was in. These events made him a pioneer of this industry, and the first known Arabian animation filmmaker in the region, specially when he received awards for his animations.

خالد سليمان الدخيل هو رسام كارتون، أنميتر، ممثل صوت، ومخرج، حاصل على جوائز. والذي عُرف بأول فنان كارتون ومخرج رسوم متحركة في المنطقة. الموقع الشخصي على الإنترنت تأسس في عام 2002م. ويتم التخطيط لإنشاء  مؤسسة خالد الدخيل كارتون بشكل رسمي في عام 2011م.

بدأ خالد الرسم وابتكار الشخصيات والقصص الكارتونية عندما كان في الخامسة من العمر، واتجه لعمل القصص المصورة في الثامنة، وكانت قصة حسان الفنان أول قصة مصورة قام خالد بنشرها وذلك في مجلة الأطفال المصورة (الجيل الجديد) عام ١٩٩٩م. أسلوبه ورسمه للشخصيات بدا مستلهما من أسلوب الرسوم المتحركة اليابانية Anime، وبـ Manga في تصميمه للقصص المصورة. بشكل عام تميز بأسلوب خاص به متأثرا بأسلوب (ديزني) في التحريك والتعابير، والشكل والمظهر من الأعمال اليابانية، خصوصا أسلوب (هاياو مايازاكي) والتي أن نشأ خالد مع أعماله.

بعد سنتين فقط، في عام 1992م بدأ خالد عمل الرسوم المتحركة بطريقة تقليب الورق Flip-Book وإنتاج أفلام كارتونية بالطريقة الكلاسيكية. ثم طور طريقة التحريك عندما اتجه للعمل باستخدام كاميرا فيديو وبعض الأدوات الأخرى. وقام بإنتاج اول عمل كارتوني مدته 15 دقيقة عن شخصية (باك مان) المعروفة وذلك بالأسلوب الكلاسيكي Fram by Frame. في وقت لاحق، حينما كان خالد يشاهد كارتون (وودي نقار الخشب)، اكتشف طريقة Cel، والتي استخدمها في صنع الأعمال الكارتونية الأخرى، وذلك عن طريق الفصل بين طبقات الشخصيات والخلفيات. ثم استخدم لاحقا كاميرا الفيديو لعمل أفلام قصيرة بأسلوب Stop-Motion مستخدما الصلصال ولعب الأطفال.

دائما ماكان خالد متحمسا للإخراج والتمثيل، وبدأ في هذا التوجه في وقت لاحق مع اشقائه والاصدقاء. وقام بتصوير وإخراج عدة أفلام قصيرة، من بينها فيلم أسموه (السَّفاح) والذي نفذه مع أشقائه أحمد وعبدالله. وقام خالد بتمثيل عدة شخصيات مختلفة فيه، مما دفعه إلى تحرير الفيديو وعمل المؤثرات البصرية.

انضم خالد الدخيل للجمعية السعودية للثقافة والفنون في عام 1998م، لكنه بقي لبضعة أشهر فقط. ووصف الوضع هناك بالـ”فوضى”. قناة العربية التقت خالد تلفزيونيا في وقت لاحق من عام 2006م حيث تحدث بصراحة عن تجربته في الجمعية واصفا الأوضاع المأساوية هناك.

في عام 2000م، بدأ خالد باستخدام برنامج أدوبي فلاش (ماكروميديا في ذلك الوقت)، وقام بإنتاج أكثر من فيلم رسومي قصير، فكان (كيك كيفي) Kick Kivi أول فيلم قصير ينفذه باستخدام فأرة الكومبيوتر فقط. هذا الفيلم والتي تلته كانت تعبر بشكل أو بآخر عن مشاعر الغضب والعاطفة التي مر بها خالد. أما في عام 2003م فقد أنتج فيلم فوائد القطط، الفيلم حضي بسمعة جيدة في الأوساط الفنية والكارتونية خصوصا على شبكة الإنترنت، وشارك في مهرجانات سينمائية من بينها مسابقة أفلام من الإمارات في عام 2007م.

في عام 2004م، قام خالد بالعمل على أكثر من برنامج ودعاية تلفزيونية، كرسام، مصمم، محرر ومخرج، إلا أنه لولعه بإنتاج الرسوم المتحركة فقد بدأ مجددا بالإنتاج الخاص وقدم في عام 2006م الفيلم الرسومي سدا والذي اتسم بأسلوب عربي، خصوصا أن أحداث الفيلم تجري في الجزيرة العربية في عام 1960م، القصة أخبرت بها والدة خالد، والتي تحكي عن شخصية (سدا أبو الخلقان) الذي عُرف بطابعه الغريب والغامض. شارك خالد بفيلم سدا في أكثر من حدث وكان أول فيلم رسومي قصير يشارك في مسابقة للأفلام، وأول فيلم رسومي يحصل على جائزة. فقد حصل على جائزة (جودة التنفيذ) في مسابقة أفلام من الإمارات في عام 2006م، فضلا عن احتلاله المركز الثالث للفيلم اليومي في شبكة أفلام التحريك الرائدة Newgrounds على الإنترنت. كما شارك في مهرجانات أخرى في بلدان مختلفة من بينها مصر، الأردن وعمان. وقد ظهر في أكثر من لقاء تلفزيوني وصحفي، وكتبت عنه وعن فنه عدة مقالات صحفية وعلى شبكة الإنترنت. هذه الأحداث جعلت منه أول رسام كارتون ومخرج رسوم متحركة ورائدا في المنطقة، خصوصا عندما حصل على جوائز عن أفلامه الرسومية.
